Profile
Living and working in remote parts of Africa for many years, exposed Paul to the natural beauty of wood as a craft material. He now expresses his passion for wood through his work as a wood-turner. By turning his vessels from green wood he allows the natural warping of the wood to dictate the final form.
My sculptural wooden vessels and bowls are created using a traditional lathe and gouges combined with contemporary carving techniques. I work almost exclusively with green wood, allowing the drying process to give the bowl or vessel its final form. The organic nature of this process sometimes results in shapes and surface textures impossible to create with tools alone. Surface embellishments such as the Japanese scorching technique Yakisugi add to the texture of the vessels. All the timber used to make my vessels are sustainably sourced, often as part of an alien eradication program.
